The term "Blood Moon" is commonly used to describe a total lunar eclipse because of the reddish hue the Moon takes on during the eclipse. Here’s why it happens: 🌕 The Science Behind the Name During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the Moon. While the Moon is in total shadow, it doesn't go completely dark, instead, it turns a deep red or copper colour. This is due to Rayleigh scattering, the same phenomenon that makes sunsets and sunrises appear red. As sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere, shorter blue wavelengths are scattered, while the longer red wavelengths are bent and filtered toward the Moon.
